With Greg Monroe next season, the Georgetown Hoyas would’ve undoubtedly been a top-5 team, Big East favorites, and a national title contender.
Without him? We’re about to find out.
The Hoyas versatile forward declared for the NBA Draft on Saturday, forgoing his final two years of eligibility. The decision comes following a season in which he was named a third-team All-American. He’s a projected lottery pick.
While the decision to relinquish a legitimate shot at a national title surely couldn’t have been made lightly, this is the smart move by Monroe. With the threat of an NBA lockout following next season, this could be his only chance at getting paid in the current, player-friendly structure. And while his draft stock could have possibly climbed had he led the Hoyas to the promised land, he’s already projected to be a high pick and has a lot more to lose than gain.
The Hoyas will now be led by Chris Wright and Austin Freeman, but will miss the best passing big man in the game and an unselfish star.
Monroe leaves Georgetown with zero NCAA Tournament wins.
